Gay footballers
I had the dubious pleasure of going to a premiership football match last night and among many conversations i had (including one about gender variance in in international sporting events!) was one concerning prejudice in football. It was something of an education (thanks, Charlie) because i learnt that in spite of what Simon Callow said in the article i posted the other day, there are actually no ‘out’ gay Premiership footballers.
What i also learnt is that one player, Justin Fashanu, came out as gay in the 1990s and later killed himself—and his death has been attributed in no small part to homophobia.
This may be common knowledge to most people, but it wasn’t common knowledge to me—football is so far out of my daily life that whilst i knew that homophobia was a huge problem (far more so than racism that the FA focusses on, i’m told), i didn’t know it was as bad as it is. And it seems like even prominent gay celebrities like Simon Callow have no idea either. So i thought i’d mention it.
(Also good to know: calling half time “the interval” is apparently something of a faux pas.)

It’s not just gay footballers, either. The world of football is full of people being abused for deviating slightly from typical “laddish” behaviour. If you have time, check out some of Graeme Le Saux’s interviews in the Guardian.
