Fuck Yeah, Gender Studies!

I just watched the film Taken (with Liam Neeson). It’s a typical thriller—you know that he’ll “save the day” from the start. Neeson plays Brian, a father who’s more or less estranged from his daughter (sidelined by a super-rich stepfather and his own embittered ex-wife); he’s also a former spy. His 17-yr-old daughter, Kim, goes to Paris with her friend Amanda against Brian’s wishes. Both girls end up being taken by Albanian human sex traffickers. Bla bla bla, Brian gets his daughter back against the odds.

But: the reason the girls get taken is not simply because of their naivety—rather, it’s because although Kim (whose virginity is mentioned several times) is very wary, Amanda wants to meet hot guys and have sex and go to parties.
And: After Brian learns of the girls’ abduction, Amanda’s family are not informed of what’s happened. At ANY point in the film. 
And: Amanda does not figure at all in Brian’s mission. He doesn’t mention that he’s looking for two girls. He doesn’t ask about her. To all intents and purposes, Amanda just doesn’t exist.
And: As Brian searches for Kim throughout Paris, he encounter’s Amanda’s dead body. 
And: She is never mentioned again. Not by him or anyone. Not when he rescues Kim. Not when he and Kim return to LA. Not ever.

What the fuck?!? Fucking Hollywood.
